Trinidad-born, Onika Bostic has been having a successful year thus far. Blessed with a gift for singing at the tender age of 11, this beautiful and talented female vocalist is from the Antiguan band Burning Flames.
Bostic joins the female likes of Destra Garcia, Sanell Dempster and Gail Ann, just to name a few, as a force to be reckoned with in the soca industry.
For Carnival 2004, Bostic collaborates with Bunji Garlin with Get On Bad, currently heating up local airwaves and built on the Rush rhythm. She also has songs with the band Burning Flames on their CD entitled Venom.
Bostic said she has been having, a good and exciting year. I love what I do. It is something I have always wanted, to sing and perform.
Adding that she will be performing at many fetes which include Bunji Garlins Childrens show, Ladies Night Out, and all Island Peoples fetes just to name a few, Bostic said though the Carnival season is a hectic one, she totally enjoys it.
Ten questions with a soca diva
1) What is your most embarrassing Carnival moment?
I really never had one.
2) What is your favourite tune this year?
Gosh, there are so many of them, mine being one of them and also the ladies. The ladies really did great work.
3) Are you playing mas or working. What band are you playing with?
I will love to play in Island Events, the Peter Elias section.
4) Who are some of your musical influences?
Definitely my boss Oungku from Burning Flames, Denyse Plummer, Singing Sandra and Machel Montano.
5) Best and worse moment for Carnival?
My best Carnival moment was crossing the big stage with Roy Cape on Carnival Tuesday singing, Mash It Up, for half an hour and just seeing the people waving.
My worst Carnival moment was two years ago at the Soca Monarch competition where I placed fourth with the tune, Mash It Up, and when I returned home, my car was vandalised.
6) What change(s) would you like to see for Carnival?
I want to see a clean Carnival without any violence.
7) What competitions are you entering, if any?
I am still considering what competition to enter.
8) What is your Carnival fetish?
To put on my costume and play mas.
9) What song are you backing for Road March?
Get on bad, with Bunji Garlin and myself and Shurwayne Winchesters Make ah Band.
10) What parties are you hitting for the Carnival season?
All the parties, as many as I could.
